Electrical switchboards are a silent threat in many commercial properties. According to the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) and Fire & Rescue NSW, over 25% of commercial fires are electrical in origin. Common causes include loose connections, faulty breakers, and overloaded circuits—issues that often remain undetected until a failure or fire occur1.

Just last month, a licensed electrician tragically lost his life after being electrocuted while working on his property in rural Queensland2. The incident highlights how even experienced professionals are vulnerable when electrical systems are not properly managed or protected.

Thermal imaging is where an infrared camera is used to take an image of exposed electrical wiring and components after the cover plate has been removed from an electrical switchboard, and any faults or hotspots show up with elevated temperatures on the image.

Thermal imaging reports are a non-invasive tool that may help identify electrical faults before they escalate into fires. By detecting issues like failing breakers, corroded terminals, load imbalances, and arc faults, clients could potentially address problems early, reducing the risk of unplanned outages and emergency repairs.

By recommending thermal imaging, brokers have the chance to demonstrate proactive risk management, positioning themselves as knowledgeable advisors rather than just policy providers. This proactive approach may help build trust and foster long-term client relationships.

Add Value Through Compliance and Due Diligence

Routine switchboard scans are a simple way to show your clients they’re making an effort to do the right thing. Regular inspections may support Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations and help meet Australian Standards by catching risks early—before regulators or insurers get involved. These inspections could also demonstrate due diligence, showing the client’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment and potentially reducing the likelihood of legal or regulatory action.

In a recent case, a Perth-based contractor was fined after failing to install key safety components in a site’s switchboard, putting users at risk of electric shock3. The negligence was only uncovered during an external inspection, reinforcing why regular, certified checks are critical for compliance and safety.

Strengthen Insurance Position and Claims Defensibility

Thermography reports could provide clear evidence of due diligence. They may help clients secure better insurance terms, support renewals, and strengthen claims defensibility after a loss. A solid inspection history could show a commitment to managing risks, making it easier for insurers to trust your client’s operations.

A single thermal imaging report might help prevent catastrophic fire losses, business disruption, and legal liability—often at a cost that’s less than an insurance excess.

Find a Certified Thermographer for Your Clients

Ensure inspections are conducted to industry standards. Refer to: AUSPTA: Find a Thermographer Tool

By encouraging thorough inspections to be completed by certified professionals, brokers may offer their clients a practical means to reduce risks and protect their property. Regular thermal imaging inspections could be an effective way to stay ahead of potential issues and ensure safer, more compliant operations.
